path 407 header

Recently, certain open houses were held across the top of Durham region on a portion of the planned extension of Hwy 407 to Hwy 115. Many historic pioneer homes and farms were offered to buyers, as well as lumber from barns and trees before being razed for construction. I was able to explore many of the homesteads with my camera. As a frequent 407 traveller myself, I am able to see the need for this highway, however, I mourn the loss of yet another part of Ontario's history. My initial paintings are the beginning of a major focus for my future artwork.

Barn in WhitbyTitle: Barn in Whitby

16 X 20

Medium: Water Mixable Oils

Price: $300

Notes: I was scolded by my art teacher at Sheridan College for painting barns. I'm sorry John Wood; I still like painting barns.

Dundas St., WhitbyTitle: Dundas St., Whitby

11 X 14

Medium: Water Mixable Oils

Notes: This (and many) old houses have been torn down. This location will be the access for the 401 extension traveling north to the new extension.

Door Under BoughsTitle: Door Under Boughs

16 X 20

Medium: Pastel

Price: $150

Notes: I am going to "tweak/finish" this one. I've had so many people look at it and admire it; I decided to put this on my website as is. As with all of these pics in this gallery, the house and trees are gone.

Farm LaneTitle: Farm Lane

10 ½ X 14 Unframed

Medium: Watercolour

Price: $275

Notes: This is the laneway off Winchester Road to the former Magnor Robson estate. All that's missing is a collie dog.

RooftopTitle: Rooftop

10 ½ X 14 Unframed

Medium: Watercolour

Price: $275

Notes: This is a view from the horse barn on the Magnor Robson property. For a better view, I crept up some rickety stairs to an apartment that was likely inhabited by horse staff.

Magnor Robson HouseTitle: Magnor Robson House

10 ½ X 14 Unframed

Medium: Watercolour

Price: $275

Notes: From the road it was almost impossible to view the splendid detail of this former mansion because of all the overgrowth. Living in the area for over two decades, I had no idea what I was missing.

PorchTitle: Porch

10 ½ X 14 Unframed

Medium: Watercolour

Price: $275

Notes: The Magnor Robson House was home to a prominent furniture maker in Oshawa. The decaying detail of the front porch tells a story of earlier days of glory.

Barn DoorTitle: Barn Door

10 ½ X 14 Unframed

Medium: Watercolour

SOLD

Notes: The huge barn on the Magnor Robson estate was eerily empty yet showed signs of horses and life.
